In this blog, we will discuss what is game server hosting and its types.

What is Game Server Hosting

Game server hosting employs specialized game servers located locally or remotely to allow multiplayer gaming. Most games that you see on the internet are connected via a game server. The game server providers rent game servers and offer tools to configure and control servers.

What are Game Clients?

Game clients are software that connects to game servers. The client receives packets of information sent by the server once it establishes the connection. Multiple clients can connect to a server at the same time.

A game server sends enough data about the internal state to let its current clients experience the right version of the game for the gamers. Apart from this, a game server also receives and processes the input of each gamer.

Let’s now learn about the different types of game servers.

Types of Game Server Hosting

Broadly, game server hosting can be categorized into three types, which are discussed below:

1. Dedicated Game Server Hosting

These are the servers that operate independently of the client. While dedicated servers can also be operated by individuals, usually these are hosted on dedicated computers residing in data processing centres. Hence, dedicated game servers provide dedicated processing power and high bandwidth. This makes it suitable for hosting high-end data centres.

Most PC multiplayer games prefer dedicated game servers hosted by companies that own the games. This allows them to control and update games. In a majority of cases, dedicated servers work in clusters to allow massive clusters and a multitude of gamers.

However, dedicated game server hosting is more expensive than other game server hosting types.

2. Listen Game Server Hosting

The concept of listen servers is similar to the game client. The only difference, however, is that they have to “talk to” the remote gamers through the local internet of the hosting gamer.

Here, the main issue is that not all local internet connections are fast enough to withstand the upload requirements of the game. This is a major concern with popular games. Typically, the limit is 16 gamers.

Another issue is that too much server load affects the performance. This is because the server also has to create an output image.

3. Peer-to-Peer Game Server Hosting

There’s no server in the peer-to-peer model. Instead, each “peer” receives the input streams of every gamer and decides on the outcomes themselves. Although peer-to-peer game server hosting is considered obsolete for today’s action-based games, these are a good choice for real-time strategy games. This is because they are suitable for video games with fewer players and tons of tokens.

The disadvantage of peer-to-peer game server hosting is that it is difficult to synchronize all peers. Moreover, small differences between peers may worsen over time. Also, supporting fresh gamers during the game is hard.

Conclusion

Hope this blog will help you choose the right game server for your gaming business and connect with the best game server hosting provider
