Biography

Somerhalder, Ian, was born on December 8, 1978, in the tired southern town of Covington, Louisiana. Ian Somerhalder is the second of his mother Edna’s (a massage therapist) and father Robert’s (an independent builder) three sons. He spent his elementary and middle school years at a private Catholic school before transferring to Mandeville High School. From the ages of 10 to 13, Ian worked as a model, and at the age of 17, he made the transition into the acting industry.

Ian starred in the “Dawson’s Creek” spin-off “Young Americans” on the WB during the summer of 2000. A prominent boarding school’s dean’s son, he portrayed Hamilton Fleming. There were only eight episodes in total before the show was canceled. The bisexual Paul Denton in the 2002 film version of the Bret Easton Ellis novel “The Rules of Attraction,” in which he co-starred alongside James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, and Shannyn Sossamon.

The role of Boone Carlyle on “Lost,” an ABC blockbuster series, gave Somerhalder his first major break in 2004. The first season’s episode 20 marked his exit from the show, although he reappeared seven more times as the character in subsequent seasons until the end. 

In June of 2009, he joined the cast of CW’s The Vampire Diaries. He played the vampire Damon Salvatore and made many appearances in the show. The debut episode of “The Vampire Diaries” had the greatest ratings of any season premiere on the CW since the network’s inception in 2006. Ian helped clean up the aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil drilling accident. The fans of “The Vampire Diaries” gave Ian $11,100 at a charity event he organized in his honor in November 2010 to benefit the humane society. 

The It Gets Better Project works to reduce the rate of suicide among LGBTQ children; Ian is a supporter of this initiative, along with his former “Vampire Diaries” co-stars Candice Accola and Michael Trevino.

On his 32nd birthday in December 2010, Ian Somerhalder founded the Ian Somerhalder Foundation to spread awareness about the value of animal and ecological protection. The use of genetically modified organisms in food production is something Ian is strongly against.

The two stars of “The Vampire Diaries,” Ian and Nina Dobrev, had been in a relationship in the past. As of 2014, he has been seeing actress Nikki Reed. They started dating in February of that year, and they got married on April 26, 2015, in Malibu. Bodhi Soleil was born in July 2017 and is their daughter.
