Somerhalder, Ian, was born on December 8, 1978, in the tired southern town of Covington, Louisiana. Ian Somerhalder is the second of his mother Edna’s (a massage therapist) and father Robert’s (an independent builder) three sons. He spent his elementary and middle school years at a private Catholic school before transferring to Mandeville High School. From the ages of 10 to 13, Ian worked as a model, and at the age of 17, he made the transition into the acting industry.

Ian starred in the “Dawson’s Creek” spin-off “Young Americans” on the WB during the summer of 2000. A prominent boarding school’s dean’s son, he portrayed Hamilton Fleming. The bisexual Paul Denton in the 2002 film version of the Bret Easton Ellis novel “The Rules of Attraction,” in which he co-starred alongside James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel, and Shannyn Sossamon.

The role of Boone Carlyle on “Lost,” an ABC blockbuster series, gave Somerhalder his first major break in 2004. The first season’s episode 20 marked his exit from the show, although he reappeared seven more times as the character in subsequent seasons until the end.
