There’s a reason why people say that anime is one of the most underrated forms of entertainment in the world. While some fantastic anime titles have high IMDb ratings, most casual viewers don’t even know they exist. If you’re looking for something new to watch, check out one of these ten anime gems. You won’t regret it!
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009–2012): IMDb Rating: 9.5/10
In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical “auto-mail” limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother’s bodies, the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
After being exiled from his homeland to revive a fallen friend, the young alchemist Edward Elric joins the military to gain more power and forbidden knowledge. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the now older Elric brothers searching for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone. This powerful artifact will allow them to break their alchemy limits and finally restore themselves. While this anime is a reboot of its predecessor, it often skips over events from the first series and assumes you’re already familiar with FMA.
2. Death Note (2006–2007): 8.4/10
It doesn’t matter what age group you belong to; everyone has heard of Death Note. Teenagers have been obsessing over this anime since it first aired in Japan- and with good reason, too! Death Note follows the story of Light Yagami, an extremely intelligent high schooler who stumbles across a book called the “Death Note.” The text is owned by a Shinigami (“god of death”) named Ryuk, who tells him that if he writes someone’s name in the book while picturing their face, they will die. Light takes it upon himself to rid the world of criminals and change it into a utopian society without crime, thus becoming known as “Kira.” But can someone who’s so obviously going to be caught pull off a perfect crime? 3. Attack on Titan (2013–2015): 9/10
This grim story follows Eren Yeager, his foster sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert in the aftermath of the destruction of their hometown in humanity’s battle against man-eating giants known as Titans. After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invaders, Eren vows revenge with the help of his friends. To do this, they must enlist in the military and survive the perils of war with the Titans.
With its high-octane storyline and jaw-dropping visuals, Attack on Titan is one of the best anime out there. It takes place in a world where giant humanoid creatures known as Titans roamed the land and seemingly drove humanity to near extinction. After a massive Titan destroys his hometown, young Eren Yeager vows revenge and joins an elite military unit to battle them to save humanity. Why not start with the show that just won the best anime at the Crunchyroll awards?
4. Hunter x Hunter (2011–2014): 9.51
Hunter x Hunter is an enthralling anime with a special place in many hearts. It follows the journey of young Gon Freecss, who finds out that his father was not only alive, but he’s one of the most potent Hunters in all of the four corners of the world. Reluctantly, Gon decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Hunter himself. His journey takes him to places he never dreamed possible, including an elite Examination school for future Hunters—and the dangers of being eaten by giant creatures are only the beginning.
It is a popular manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1998 to 2014. The plot tells of Gon Freecss, who discovers that his father, who he knew was dead, is alive and well. Unlike the other family members, Gon is an ordinary kid who doesn’t possess extraordinary abilities. So, having great potential that even he has no idea about, Gon departs on a journey to find his father and determine what kind of person he truly is.
5. Steins; Gate (2011–2015): 8.8
It takes a lot to become a mad scientist. There are countless theories, experiments, and calculations that have to be made. And then you need funding. That’s where Madarame Hiroki comes in. He has just introduced the newest member of the Labmem circle, Okabe Rintarou- an eccentric college dropout who aims to unveil the truth behind humanity’s evolution.
Together with their friends, they embark on a journey through time, space, and human emotions. The series follows Rintarō Okabe, a self-proclaimed “mad scientist” involved in a conspiracy concerning a mysterious phenomenon known as “Reading Steiner,” which causes all around him to remember an alternate worldline he and his friends are their alternate selves with different personalities. When Rintarō and his mad scientist friends accidentally create a less-than-great alternate timeline called “Ruube’s World,” they must use the time machine to undo all the wrongs in this new worldline.
