Daily Show star Roy Wood Jr, 44, is slated to headline the 2023 White House Correspondents Dinner this spring in Washington, DC

Comedian Roy Wood Jr will headline this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Wood is best known for playing a reporter on The Daily Show.

‘It will be a great night that will go down in the history books, or not, depending on which state you live in,’ the humorist joked in a statement.

He also said, ‘It’s an honor to be a part of a long-running tradition of celebrating those members of the media, who work so hard to uncover the truth, and hold our government accountable.’

This year the annual star-studded gathering will take place in Washington, DC on April 29 and President Joe Biden is expected to attend.

The comedian currently has a stand-up special on Paramount+ called Imperfect Messenger.

Tamara Keith, president of the correspondents’ association, said on Thursday that Wood, 44, brings ‘a journalistic eye to his comedy.’

It was added: ‘He’s hilarious – but also makes sure his audiences are thinking as they laugh.’

Tamara also disclosed her objective for the event.

It was shared: ‘My aim with this year’s dinner is to lift up the importance of a free and independent press to a functioning democracy, so I am thrilled to be able to feature a comedian who gets what journalism is all about.’

Last year the dinner returned as a live event after the covid-19 pandemic halted it for two years.

It also marked the return of the president and first lady attending.

Donald Trump opted out of the star-studded event during his time in office.

The show’s former host Trevor Noah spoke at last year’s dinner, during which President Joe Biden poked fun at himself, Trump, the Republican Party and the members of the press.

‘I’m really excited to be here tonight with the only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have,’ Biden, a Democrat, quipped to an audience of about 2,600.

According to the WHCA website the event raises money.

‘Our annual dinner is our main source of revenue to finance all of our work, including support of the journalists working to cover the president, events and programs to educate the public about the value of the First Amendment and a free press, and scholarships to help the next generation of journalists,’ it is noted.

And ticket sales are limited.

‘Only news organizations with members are eligible to buy tickets to the annual dinner. Members are sent details beginning several months before the dinner.

‘Auctions and raffles of WHCA dinner tickets designed to raise money for other organizations or for commercial purposes are against the policy of the organization.’
