Today host Karl Stefanovic took a thinly veiled swipe at his mate Michael Clarke on Monday – days after footage of him intervening in the cricketer’s blazing row with girlfriend Jade Yarbrough went viral.
Stefanovic joked on air that he’d busted his ‘hammie’ – an apparent reference to the hamstring injury Clarke suffered in the Noosa fracas on January 10.
He made the remark after sports presenter Alex Cullen reported on Novak Djokovic’s torn hamstring at Australian Open, which the Serbian tennis ace says he has been managing with ‘pills and hot cream’.

Back in the Today studio, Stefanovic hunched over his chair while pretending to wince in pain as his co-host Sarah Abo joked: ‘We might have a hamstring injury [here] as well.’
‘Can I get some hot cream please? Just done me hammy,’ Stefanovic groaned while smiling mischievously.
‘I don’t know how he did it either. He just was sitting there and now he’s standing up complaining about a hamstring injury,’ Abo said.

Stefanovic joked that Abo ‘wouldn’t understand’ his pain because she wasn’t an ‘elite athlete’ like him.
‘You can just pull a hammy by sitting down. Hot cream, please!’ he exclaimed.

Coincidentally, Clarke’s injury was also brought up when the ex-cricketer returned to Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast on Monday. (Clarke is pictured second from right with co-hosts Laurie Daley and Gerard Middleton)
Clarke’s co-host Gerard Middleton couldn’t resist joking about the hamstring injury during the broadcast, remarking the bruise on his ‘hammie’ was ‘two-feet’ long.
‘I want to ask you, you showed us before that bruise on your hamstring, that is incredible, mate. You won’t be able to walk properly for weeks,’ Middleton joked.
At the start of the broadcast, Clarke also told his co-hosts Middleton and Laurie Daley his injury was ‘on the mend’ as the trio discussed their summer breaks.
He shrugged off his injury, saying: ‘Nah, it’s fine, buddy, it’s on the mend, I’m good to go, I’m ready, game day, good to go, on the mend.’

Extraordinary footage emerged last Wednesday of a heated exchange between Clarke and his girlfriend while they were on holiday in Noosa. The melee was over Clarke’s ex Pip Edwards, with Yarbrough accusing Clarke of cheating on her with the P.E Nation founder
Extraordinary footage emerged last Wednesday of a heated exchange between Clarke and his girlfriend while they were on holiday in Noosa.
In the video, which was filmed by an onlooker on January 10 and later sold to The Daily Telegraph for a reported $10,000 fee, Yarbrough accused Clarke of cheating on her with his ex, fashion designer Pip Edwards, on December 17.
Others in the group, including Stefanovic, his wife Jasmine – Yarbrough’s sister – and celebrity accountant Anthony Bell, tried to defuse the fracas.

Yarbrough and Clarke, who was limping in the footage after hurting his hamstring, have since been slapped with ‘public nuisance’ fines.
Stefanovic is yet to make a statement on the matter, but was asked about the footage during an event at the Australian Open on Thursday.
According to the Herald Sun, he smiled when asked if he wanted to comment but refused to say anything.

‘You know what the answer is going to be,’ he replied.
A remorseful Clarke has since taken full responsibility for what happened.
‘I’m absolutely gutted I’ve put people I hold in the highest regard in this position. My actions in the lead-up to this altercation were nothing short of shameful and regrettable,’ he said.

Edwards, the ‘other woman’ in the scandal, issued a statement on the night the footage was released. ‘This is not my circus. Yet again, Michael in his true nature has not taken responsibility for his actions and I was blatantly lied to,’ she told Daily Mail Australia. ‘I am shattered that because of my actions I’ve drawn women of class and integrity, and my mates, into this situation.’
