Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson look back for How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’ 20th anniversary

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson were back together again on Monday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their popular romantic comedy How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.

The 53-year-old Oscar winner and the 43-year-old Glass Onion actress caught up virtually with a video chat that they posted to Instagram in which they looked back on the film.

The subject turned to their sizzling chemistry in the film, which led them to declare that they ‘kiss nicely’ when on screen.

The chat came amid a busy news day for McConaughey, as it was revealed that he was on deck to lead a Yellowstone spinoff as star Kevin Costner readies to depart the series.

He was also revealed as the voice of Elvis Presley in a teaser trailer for Netflix’s upcoming adult animated series Agent Elvis.

Ahead of the Instagram session, Kate shared a playful black-and-white photo of McConaughey drawing a pencil-thin mustache on her.

‘How To Lose A Guy is officially 20 years old this week so ✨Matthew and me✨ decided to meet you here at 12 noon Pacific Time today,’ she wrote in her caption while tagging her costar.

In the throwback photo, she was dressed in a white tank top with suspenders and a top hat, while Matthew wore a casual white T-shirt and a hat over his curly hair.

In the follow-up post, which was shared to Kate’s Instagram, she wrote, ‘Love this man,’ and wished their film a ‘happy anniversary.’

The Almost Famous actress admitted that her fans asked ‘all the time’ what it was like to share a kiss with the True Detective star in their 2003 film.

‘My whole thing is like, we’re always in weird environments [when we kiss on screen]. It’s never like… there was only one time when we kissed that was like so nice and gentle, in the bathroom,’ she said with a laugh, via People.

‘Yeah, everything else has not been climate-controlled,’ Matthew replied jokingly. ‘Everything else was like, “Swim up to the top, the sharks almost ate you, you just fell from a plane from 300 feet, tread water and before you catch you breath, kiss.”‘

‘When you’re kissing anyone in a movie, it’s professional; we’re actually trying to create something that evokes something in a certain way that might not exactly be the way you would necessarily do it in real life,’ Kate responded to clarify.

Despite the artificiality of a kiss on a film set, Kate suggested she was still a fan of the experience.

‘But, in respect to our now partners, we do kiss nicely. It was always a very nice kiss,’ she declared, while Matthew ‘absolutely’ agreed with her.

McConaughey has been married to the model Camila Alves since 2012, while Hudson has been in a relationship with Danny Fujikawa since 2016.

The lovebirds welcomed their first child together — her third — in 2018, and they got engaged in September 2021.

In addition to daughter Rani Rose, four, she shares her 19-year-old son Ryder Robinson with her ex-husband Chris Robinson, and her 11-year-old son Bingham with Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy.

She and Matthew also mused on what made them such a great on-screen couple, and he theorized that their strengths with improving together allowed them to ‘take this a few more steps’ than what was written on the page.

He added that their collaborations, which also included the 2008 action rom-com Fools Gold, were more ‘play’ than ‘work’ for him.

‘We enjoy going toe to toe,’ he said.

‘I think maybe it has something to do with our freedom. I feel like we’re both very free,’ she continued. ‘We don’t constrict ourselves to an idea of what we’re “supposed” to be doing. There’s something spontaneous about the way we were able to work together. When you went one direction, I went with you — but then I would be like, “I’m gonna throw him off a little bit. Let’s see what happens if I do a sharp right.” [You’re] like, “Okay, I’m coming sharp right!”‘

‘We were constantly jousting,’ Matthew replied, while she added, ‘We have a thing!’

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days ended up being a massive hit, more than tripling its $50 million budget by grossing $177.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

The film was inspired by a non-narrative book of the same name full of comedic rules about things to avoid while dating, so the movie’s story was crafted from scratch around some of those rules.

McConaughey plays an ad man who makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him, but his plan goes awry when the woman he chooses, a writer, is planning to write a story about how she got her boyfriend to breakup with her.
