How Canada Is Welcoming Immigrants and Making a Mark in the Tech Industry

Mike Tippett is a Canadian entrepreneur, educator, and a columnist. He is the founder of NowPublic, a company that deals with citizen journalism. Some of his American entrepreneur friends had a talk with him before Trump took office in January 2017. Tippett said that most of his friends had startups and tech companies in Silicon Valley.

Also, almost half of America’s startups are started by immigrants. The US tech companies knew from the beginning that it would become difficult for immigrant skilled workers to get a US visa. Most tech companies have highly skilled immigrants working for them.

So Tippett gave a solution that will completely work in their favor. He told them to move to Vancouver, Canada and open offices there.

Vancouver’s growing tech industry

Some of the major tech industries who have headquarters in Vancouver are Amazon, SAP, Microsoft, and Slack. Vancouver is closely located to major cities of the US as well. It is a two hour drive from Seattle. There are plenty of direct flights from San Francisco to Vancouver. Tippett feels there will be an increase in the tech industry count in Canada. Tippett owns another company True North that helps tech immigrant workers with taxes and other necessary documents.

He said that earlier America was a country where you could go anytime and live the American dream. It doesn’t hold true anymore. You could be successful there and no one would kick you out. But now you never know when you will be deported.

Justin Trudeau’s government is fiercely marketing Canada as an alternative to America’s Silicon Valley. But immigrants can’t just show up. You have be highly skilled and deserving to be a part of Canada’s tech industry. Around 15,000 people illegally crossed the border from the US to Canada for a better life.
