‘My foot was hanging off’: Maya Jama revealed she was hospitalised for two days and left in a wheelchair after ripping a nerve in her foot during one of her previous hosting gigs
Speaking on Pretty Little Thing’s Behind Closed Doors podcast, she said: ‘I went to Ayia Napa when I was 17 to host Charlie Sloth’s show Fire In The Booth.
‘But the day before the actual beach party thing we were supposed to be hosting, I ended up slipping on a bit of mashed-up kerb.
‘The bottom of my foot was hanging off. I had to be in hospital for two days and ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of the time. I ripped a nerve and couldn’t feel it.’

She admitted: ‘I ended up slipping on a bit of mashed-up kerb. The bottom of my foot was hanging off. I had to be in hospital for two days and ended up in a wheelchair’
She continued: ‘I was getting carried into the ambulance like “wahey…” not knowing that I might not be able to bend my f*****g toes.
‘The big one doesn’t bend… it can bend but it doesn’t tuck. I will never forget that trip.’
It comes after Maya reportedly filled Kate Moss’ shoes as the new face of Rimmel London.

New venture: It comes after Maya has reportedly filled Kate Moss’ shoes as the new face of Rimmel London
She is said to have signed a multi-million pound deal to replace the 49-year-old supermodel, who has been the role for almost 20 years.Â
While the move shows Maya, who is worth £2 million, is making big waves in the industry, but some insiders have said the decision may spark an ageist row.
A source told The Sun: ‘Rimmel is one of the biggest brands in beauty with a very British core, so pinpointing Maya to be their figurehead shows she’s very much the It Girl of the moment.
‘They needed a big name to take over from Kate, who had already stepped back from the role.

Shake-up: Kate has been the face of Rimmel for twenty years – but is said to have been replaced by MayaÂ
‘Rimmel believes Maya ticks that box — plus they hope she can also appeal to a younger and more diverse audience. A backlash is expected given Maya is nearly half Kate’s age, but the company are happy with their decision. It’s a dream come true for Maya.’
MailOnline contacted Rimmel and a representative for Maya for comment. Â
It comes after Maya reportedly quit her presenting role on BBC Three’s Glow Up following her success as the new host of Love Island.
The television star has replaced Laura Whitmore as the new face of ITV‘s Love Island for this January’s series, which started earlier this month.

Moving on:Â Maya has reportedly quit her presenting role on BBC Three’s Glow Up following her success as the new host of Love Island (pictured on Aftersun)
And the star – who has been given more screen time than former host on the main show and has sent the ratings of Aftersun soaring – is said to have decided against returning to Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star, which sees make-up artists compete in a variety of challenges.
Maya took over the role from documentary maker and former Strictly Come Dancing winner Stacey Dooley in 2021 and returned for the 2022 series.
But, according to The Sun, insiders claim Maya will not be returning to the make-up show for another run.
The BBC and a representative for Maya both declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.
It comes after Maya’s signing as Love Island host sent viewers into a frenzy – with more tuning in to watch her on spin-off show Aftersun than Sunday night’s episode. Â

Maya’s first time fronting Aftersun proved to be a roaring success as initial ratings reported a peak of 1.82million tuning into the show – compared to the 1.51million watching Love Island.Â
Maya looked incredible on the show, opting for a bold hot pink dress with a daring cutout by Hanifa, that showed some serious skin – in what is her latest raciest wardrobe choice. Â
Her toned stomach was on full display in the revealing off-the-shoulder number, which she paired with matching pink high heels.
Maya is currently winning in the TV world as Love Island bosses granted her 50 percent more airtime than previous host Laura.
After just four episodes, Maya had already been featured in the hit TV show for 19 minutes and 55 seconds. Â
In the same episode of the last series, Laura had only clocked up 13 minutes and 26 seconds.
Debates over the host’s timeframes on set have been about since Caroline Flack, 40, first began presenting Love Island in 2015.
Laura’s husband, Iain Stirling, 34, even made a joke during the Love Island series.
And during episode one, Iain could be heard on the voiceover cracking a joke by saying, ‘She could’ve just sent a text, but we wanted to get our money’s worth out of that return flight to Cape Town.’ Â
And Maya doesn’t plan to stop there because, according to The Sun, Maya has said she intends to visit the new South African villa as often as she possibly can.
However, she has also stated that she will be in London each Sunday to present Love Island’s spin-off show Aftersun.
