  • Jordan Belfort was born on July 9, 1961, to a Jewish couple in the Bronx, New York. His father’s name is Max while his mother’s name is Leah who were accountants by profession. He completed his elementary and higher schooling in Bayside, Bronx in the Queens neighborhood. He has been heavily inclined towards business since started. During childhood, Jordan Belfort and his best friend Elliot Loewenstern used to sell ice cream in the beach area and earned $20,000 from this side hustle. 
  • Jordan then enrolled in the American University majoring in biology and he paid his fees from the money he had made from his side hustle. He then enrolled in the University of Maryland to pursue a course in dentistry but soon withdrew after finding out there was no scope for making money as a dentist.

  •  Success did not come overnight to Jordan; his initial days were rough and he lived a humble lifestyle. His first job after college was as a door-to-door salesman. Later he also started a meat-selling business which was a massive success initially but soon failed and he had to file for bankruptcy. 
  • Career as a Stock Broker – His introduction to the stock market was through a family friend who gave him a job as a trainee stockbroker at L.F. Rothschild but after the market crashed in 1987, he was laid off. 
  • The turning point in his career came when he founded Stratton Oakmont which was a franchise of Stratton Securities. The purpose of the firm was to pick up penny stocks and manipulate them. His venture was successful and he led a lavish lifestyle. During this era, Belfort became addicted to methaqualone. His firm was a hit and had issued stocks over $1 billion. The movies, Boiler Room and The Wolf of Wall Street are based on Jordan Belfort and his firm.  
  • In the late 1980’s his firm was delisted by the National Association of Securities Dealers and was ruled out of business later. Jordan was also charged with securities fraud and money laundering in 1999. Belfort had no other option than to become an informer for the FBI. He testified against all the partners and associates involved in the scam. He was awarded 4 years in prison and served 22 months for the pump and dump scam where some investors lost nearly USD 200 million. His inmate in the prison was Tommy Chong who motivated him to write his experience as a stockbroker. After coming out of prison, Belfort became a motivational speaker and a writer. Belford even had to pay 50% of his income and assets as a restitution amount.
