Brooke Boney praises the Today show for making breakfast TV more diverse after appointing new co-host Sarah Abo

Brooke Boney, 35, has praised the Today show in becoming more diverse since co-host Sarah Abo, 36, stepped into her new role this week. 

The entertainment host, who is a proud Gomeroi woman, explained that herself and Sarah do not take the positions they have for granted, she told TV Tonight: ‘This is actually very special and very cool that we get to do this’.

Sarah, who was born in Syria and moved to Australia at the age of four, received a phone call from Brooke after her debut as Today show host on Monday.

According to Brooke, the two of them ‘reflected’ on what it meant for the two of them to be holding such high ranking roles on the television morning show. 

She explained that it is all about representation on TV, she said: ‘You have to have a reason to throw yourself so much into the TV world. 

‘For me, it is about representation because when I was younger there were no blackfellas who were part of news and current affairs shows or breakfast TV.’

Brooke looked back at how her grandparents were not allowed to be seen during the daylight hours but now the tables have drastically turned as she now greets everyone, every morning. 

The 35-year-old admitted that the sentiment is always close to her heart. 

‘It’s never lost to me how important and how special that is.’

This year, Brooke will be celebrating her fifth year with Today.

At the time through a press release Sarah expressed her excitement to join the team in such an informative and entertaining role.
