Amy Winehouse biopic is criticised for ‘exploiting singer’s legacy’

Fans of Amy Winehouse have criticised the making of the Back To Black biopic about the singer’s life as filming has started to get underway this month.

Many have accused the project of ‘exploiting the singer’s legacy’ and ‘capitalising off her trauma’, with some calling for people to ‘just let her rest’.

The project which began shooting in London last week features Industry star Marisa Abela as the late musician – who died from alcohol poisoning aged 27 in 2011.

Recent images released from filming have given a glimpse at the biopic, with one scene showing Marisa transformed into Amy as she sobs hysterically while recreating her husband Blake Fielder-Civil’s arrest.

In reaction one said on Twitter: ‘This is not a great start. Can we please the deceased alone? More often than not, these biopics are a mess and exploitative.’

Many fans also pointed out that they won’t support the film at all because they believe it would feature the singer’s suffering when she was still alive and that people should ‘let her rest.’

One wrote: ‘I feel very protective over Amy Winehouse’s memory and my gut instinct is to rebuke this biopic. i think most of her fans just want her to rest in peace without anyone sensationalising or exploiting her legacy. the Amy doc is all we need.’

Another said: ‘I’m frustrated and confused as to why we need this biopic about Amy Winehouse. she had such a traumatic time in the spotlight, and it feels gross to capitalise off of that. why can’t we just let her rest. remember her through her music.’

Someone else commented: ‘Hollywood is doing everything in their power to constantly disrespect Amy Winehouse at any chance they can get, like just let her rest in peace.’

It comes as Amy’s father Mitch has said that Marisa is a great choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like the late star.

He told TMZ: ‘Marisa is Marisa and Amy is Amy … so it’s no big deal if they aren’t mirror images.’

He added that plenty of actors don’t look exactly like who they are playing – and that Eddie Marsan who will play Mitch isn’t an exact match for his appearance either.

It also comes as friends of Amy are furious with the makers of the biopic for failing to consult them about the star’s life.

They claim that executives working on Back To Black have not been in touch to ask about their memories of the late singer, raising fears that the film will be inaccurate.

One told The Mail on Sunday that they are also unhappy at the casting of Marisa because, despite the near perfect wig she wears and the identical tattoos, they do not think she looks like the Rehab singer.

They also contrast Roedean-educated Ms Abela’s social background with London-born Ms Winehouse, who was known for her streetwise persona.

‘Nobody consulted us about Amy,’ said the friend.

‘How can it be authentic and accurate if they don’t know the real Amy or the truth about what happened in her final years? We are against this and we are upset. Amy was absolutely striking.’

Despite it being almost 12 years since Ms Winehouse was found unresponsive at her townhouse in Camden, North London, in July 2011, her grief-stricken friends still believe it is early for such a film to be made.

However, movies about late stars have been released sooner. I Wanna Dance With Somebody, a film telling the life story of pop star Whitney Houston, who died a year later, in 2012, is currently in cinemas.

Sources on the set of Back To Black – directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and named after Ms Winehouse’s hit 2006 album – say that filming is only due to last eight weeks, which industry insiders believe is not very long for such a production.

One insider said: ‘It all feels very fast, almost a bit smash and grab.’

They also questioned how the paparazzi were presented during scenes filmed last week.

Onlookers say photographers were depicted as being aggressive towards Ms Winehouse, while in reality the pop star, who was 27 when she died, had a respectful relationship with them and grew to be friendly with some.

Eddie Marsan will star in the film as the singer’s father Mitch and Jack O’Connell as her husband Blake Fielder-Civil.
