What Actually is a Migraine?

Essentially, a migraine is an intense and often incredibly severe headache that can be described as pain on one side of the head in the form of a throbbing motion.

Migraines are unfortunately exceedingly common and according to a recent study, affect approximately one in every five women and one in every fifteen men. If you are someone who is going to experience a migraine, then it is highly likely that you will have had your first migraine before the age of 21.

Different Types of Migraines

There are basically three different types of migraines:

  • Migraine With Aura

A migraine with aura usually begins with a repeated and chronological order of warning signs, including a pain above the eyes and/or flashing lights in the corner of the eyes.

  • Migraine Without Aura

A migraine without aura is when the migraine immediately comes over you with absolutely no signs whatsoever. To make matters worse, migraines without aura are the most common of the three different types.

  • Migraine Aura With No Headache

Migraine auras with no headache are often otherwise called silent migraines and this is where all of the other usual symptoms of migraine occur, but obviously with no accompanying headache.

The Three Stages of a Migraine

Although naturally, everyone is an individual, there are usually three basic stages of migraine which the vast majority of people susceptible to migraines experience:

  • The Prodromal Stage

The prodromal stage of a migraine is when you experience changes in your behavior, energy levels, mood, and appetite, which can occur either just before the migraine starts or sometimes even a day or so beforehand.

  • The Aura Stage

The aura stage is when you experience issues with a matter relating to your sight, including blind spots and flashing lights.

  • The Headache Stage

Quite self-explanatory—the headache stage is when you will experience throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head and you will usually either feel or be sick as well.
